The Power of Daily Habits: Lessons from Celebrities

Yes, we know New Year’s resolutions come and go and can be hard to stick to. In fact, a common statistic is that only about 8% of us are able to successfully stick to resolutions.

As you consider setting goals for the year ahead, rather than getting overwhelmed by making big changes, think of it more like changing a habit and then try to do your new routine for roughly 21 days. This is approximately how long it takes for a new habit to form according to studies conducted by Marco Palma, PhD, associate professor and director of the Human Behavior Lab at Texas A&M University.

So, here are some daily habits and routines celebrities have embraced over the years that you may want to consider trying…at least for 21 days.

5 Daily Habits from Some Pretty Cool Celebs

Meditation for Jennifer Anniston

How does one of America’s favorite stars keep her youthful glow? A reported morning routine of waking up early, drinking warm water with lemon and meditating for 20 minutes. Studies have shown meditation to offer myriad benefits, and lucky for you, experts say you can reap those benefits with even just a few minutes of meditation on a daily basis.

Running for Kim Kardashian

If you’re trying to keep up with Kim Kardashian, well then, you better incorporate waking up at 6am each day and going for a run for about an hour, follow this with some abs or legs work, and a healthy breakfast.

A Multivitamin for Marilyn Monroe

Who knew this famous star was so ahead of her time? She not only focused on eating protein each morning, but she also counted on a daily multivitamin to keep her health in check while following her hectic schedule.

The Gym and Greens for Oprah

Like the others, Oprah is up early and heads to the gym for about an hour. Then after doing some work, she likes to sip on a blended green juice consisting of spinach, parsley, a bit of apple juice, celery, and cucumbers.

Tracking To-Do’s for Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran

To get ahead of each day, Corcoran writes her to-do list the night before. That way she can do her workout in the morning and then knows what she has to tackle when she gets to the office. And, a new study recently showed that doing your to-do list the night before can help you sleep better, which may be yet another good habit to focus on.

Habits Will Eliminate the Internal Chatter

Having a daily routine is what many successful people attribute to their success. By definition, a habit is an automatic behavior. Daily habits or a routine can help you focus and eliminate some of the chatter in your mind. Think about it, if you wake up at the same time each morning and do your morning workout, then you don’t have to spend the day wondering when you will fit in your workout. If you eat a healthy breakfast of oatmeal each day, you won’t need to waste time wondering what you should eat. As former President Barack Obama, who kept a very simple morning routine, once told Vanity Fair,

“I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”

If you eliminate your brain’s chatter, you have more energy to spend on important things. And, it’s really changing our habits that result in success. You can lose weight or save money, but if you don’t change your eating or spending habits these changes won’t stick.
