The Power of Daily Habits: Lessons from Celebrities

Yes, we know New Year’s resolutions come and go and can be hard to stick to. In fact, a common statistic is that only about 8% of us are able to successfully stick to resolutions.

As you consider setting goals for the year ahead, rather than getting overwhelmed by making big changes, think of it more like changing a habit and then try to do your new routine for roughly 21 days. This is approximately how long it takes for a new habit to form according to studies conducted by Marco Palma, PhD, associate professor and director of the Human Behavior Lab at Texas A&M University.

If you’re trying to keep up with Kim Kardashian, well then, you better incorporate waking up at 6am each day and going for a run for about an hour, follow this with some abs or legs work, and a healthy breakfast.

Think about it, if you wake up at the same time each morning and do your morning workout, then you don’t have to spend the day wondering when you will fit in your workout. If you eat a healthy breakfast of oatmeal each day, you won’t need to waste time wondering what you should eat. As former President Barack Obama, who kept a very simple morning routine, once told Vanity Fair,

“I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”

If you eliminate your brain’s chatter, you have more energy to spend on important things. And, it’s really changing our habits that result in success. You can lose weight or save money, but if you don’t change your eating or spending habits these changes won’t stick.
